The Mighty Americans Program invites 3rd–6th grade students to become part of America’s story by portraying notable Americans during the American Eras Parade on July 4, 2026. Students will walk along the parade route dressed as historical figures who shaped our nation’s legacy through courage, leadership, innovation, and service.

The Mighty Americans Project brings history to life through the imagination, creativity, and energy of children. As part of Huntsville’s America’s 250th celebration and inspired by the spirit of the Semiquincentennial school initiatives, this experience allows young people to become part of the story by dressing as notable Americans from throughout history.
From presidents and astronauts to inventors, athletes, civil rights leaders, entertainers, and pioneers, children will transform the parade route into a fun and educational celebration of American history, leadership, courage, and innovation.
Our goal is to create unforgettable memories for families while inspiring the next generation to dream big, lead boldly, and recognize that the next Mighty American could be walking in the parade today.

Costumes are NOT provided.
Families are responsible for assembling or creating costumes for participation.
Parents/Guardians will be required to stay with their children on the parade route. Parent accompaniment is mandatory.
We are actively exploring several options to help keep the children comfortable during the event, including historic vehicles, decorated cars and trolleys, themed trailers, and other creative transportation options that allow the children to remain visible while helping them beat the July heat.

Participation in the Mighty Americans Program requires a parent or guardian to remain with their child for the entire parade experience—from check-in at the staging area through checkout at the end of the route.
This is a requirement, not a suggestion.
Whether your child is walking with a group or riding on a parade entry, a parent or guardian must be present at all times. Unaccompanied children will not be permitted to participate.

A driver's license is preferred.
Volunteers will verify the identity of the adult checking in the child.

Once checked in, your child may report to their assigned Mighty Americans era and/or group.
Parents and guardians must remain with their child and stay nearby until the parade begins.

Mighty American Groups
Some children shine even brighter when they are part of a team! Throughout the parade, we will feature special Mighty Americans Groups made up of children dressed alike and celebrating iconic American people, ideas, and achievements.
Examples include Little Scientists, Little Astronauts, Little Abraham Lincolns, Little George Washingtons, Little Uncle Sams, Little Statues of Liberty, and Little "Tree Huggers".
We are looking for several children to participate in each group. If your child would enjoy being part of a coordinated group with other children wearing similar costumes, please indicate your interest on the registration form. We will do our best to place participants in one of these fun and memorable parade groups.

We are looking for parent volunteers to assist with the day of activities.
We are specifically looking for parents to oversee specific groupings of Mighty Americans and walk with them in the parade.
We are looking for parents to help with costume creation, especially if a parent has experience with sewing or understands costume design.

Siblings are welcome!
There are some notable characters that require more than one child in costume. You can either dress them both in the same costume or choose an era for your children to represent to ensure they are close to each other.
Each child will need their own application.

No. However, the children must be able to understand who they are representing, if asked. We want this to be fun, but educational as well.

Yes. Karla Murphy will schedule a parents meeting once all information has been delivered.

We are asking parents to wear red, white, and/or blue and remain with their child. Wave to the crowd, watch your child(ren) along the parade route, and provide water for them to keep them hydrated.

Yes. All costumes MUST be approved. All costumes must be sent to Karla Murphy between June 12 - June 19 for approval.

We are looking for 50-150 children to participate in the American Eras Parade.

Yes. When you apply, there is a list on the form. You can chose a Notable American that isn't on the list as well.

Former Presidents & First Ladies
Astronauts, Inventors, & Scientists
Civil Rights Leaders
Athletes
Military Heroes
Musicians, Actors and Cultural Icons
Uncle Sam or Abe Lincoln
Historical Figures connected to American history
Futuristic figures that represent the future of America (i.e. Little Robots)
Children may not dress as:
Characters associated with violence, horror, or gore
Villains, criminals, pirates, gangsters, or outlaws
Overly frightening costumes or horror movie characters.
Characters promoting drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or vaping
Individuals known primarily for criminal activity
Costumes containing offensive language, symbols, or imagery
Costumes that are sexually suggestive or inappropriate for children
Characters from movies, television shows, or video games that are not connected to American history, culture, innovation, service, or civic life
Any costume that may be considered unsafe, disruptive, or offensive to parade participants or spectators

No, participation is free.

Yes. The America’s 250th Parade is expected to be televised, photographed, livestreamed, and heavily promoted through WHNT and social media coverage through their app.
By participating, families acknowledge that photos and video may be used for promotional and historical purposes.
Make sure to share the WHNT app with extended family who cannot make it to the parade route.
